And so it begins. I've sat on the sidelines for many years and kept my thoughts to myself on many things in the world of sports, but I've decided just as seemingly everyone else feels the need to have their opinions heard (no matter how absurd or unworthy of platform) that I may as well jump into the fray as well. With that said, here's where I'm coming from. I am Georgia born and a University of Georgia Alum that has worked in sports journalism since 1998. Granted this is not beat writing or print journalism in any sort, but I am a journalist at a national media outlet and it is my business to have an educated opinion about occurrences in the world of sport...collegiate, professional, international, intramural, prep...whatever. Yes, I was an athlete. In fact, I turned down two opportunities to play football at the college level to pursue a degree from the Grady School of Journalism at UGA. I am a huge Georgia Bulldogs fan (in every way) as well as a recently depressed Oakland Raiders fan. If you need an explanation of the latter, just ask. Now that all of that is said, that doesn't mean that I know everything there is to know about everything in the world of sport, but I do believe I know how to find the real story in any given game and I know a baller when I see one. Which brings me to the reason I'm starting this blog in the first place. Welcome to my new blog....'A DAMN BEAST!' as in "He/She was A DAMN BEAST in that game." Interested?
The idea behind this collection of ramblings is to shine a deserving light on athletes that dominate their sport on any given night, or even in a season or a career. This does not mean that I will post daily or that I will chronicle every fantastic effort in the sports landscape, but I will call them like I see them when I do. In fact, I think this can go the other way. If a player's performance is just awful, you can expect me to call them out on here too. I can think of more than one stinky beast roaming the athletic jungle. You will get your fill of DAWGS football news as well as RAIDERS coverage, but my opinions will be all over the realm of sport. The one thing I will promise you is that I will do my very best to ALWAYS be rational and back my thoughts up with REAL WORLD examples and not some XBOX philosophy on how the game should be played. I have been inspired by my friends in the blogosphere that focus on the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oakland Raiders and I can only hope to earn some modest level of readership and bring some knowledge and entertainment to that group the way those fine folks have done for me.
As a tease, here are a couple of things I hope to offer on the blog from time to time....
*DAWGBEAST of the week.....this will be the Georgia football player that goes above and beyond the call of duty
*RETROBEAST.....this one is pretty straightforward. Here is where you will find my opinions on players gone by that utterly dominated the game on a level few have ever seen.
You can also count on seeing anything sports related roll across the blog from time to time. EVERYTHING is fair game.
So, in conclusion, here we are. I hope you will swing by from time to time to check me out, and please feel free to share your thoughts with me in the comments section. I'm really looking forward to this process and I hope you will join me for the journey.
And, we're off........
